QlikView is the world's first analytical platform, which implements an associative architecture with the processing of data in memory. Managing the relationship between the data is not at the application level, it is at the level of the internal mechanisms of the platform. QlikView stores the selected data tables and associations between them in-memory. Each value of each field is connected to all the other values in the entire database. Datasets can consist of hundreds of tables with thousands of fields.
When the user selects a value for any field of any database table, QlikView, unlike traditional BI-tool is not subjected to any load. Instead, the rest of the fields instantly adjust to the choice made by the user - the filters are getting applied automatically. User-selected values are highlighted in green, all the data associated with that choice - white and unrelated data appear gray. This ensures an intuitive, user-friendly way to explore the data necessary for a deep and thorough understanding of the situation.
QlikView platform consists of several components, which are relatively responsible for QlikView content creation(QlikView Developer), its delivery (QlikView Server / Publisher) and use (QlikView client applications ).
QlikView is a Windows-application running on x86 and x64 architectures and it provides a unique scope for BI deployment flexibility.
A small company may use one or several QlikView Client installations, which are both the development environment and the user application. This solution enables you to engage in business intelligence even with the most minimal investment.
With a larger amount of data and increased number of users, you might use a client-server architecture, involving the processing of data on the server and sending the results of calculations to clients on the network. There are two server products: QlikView Small Business Edition Server and QlikView Enterprise Edition Server.
QlikView Server provides:
- multi-user work and optimized use of memory;
secure centralized storage;
centralized update of all of the QlikView applications;
a single point of access to QlikView-applications for all users;
remote working in networks Internet / Intranet through different types of QlikView Client;
authorization and authentication of users.
QlikView offers the widest range of clients: the standard Windows.exe, plug-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer, thin AJAX-and Java-client. QlikView can run on mobile devices: the version of QlikView Java Mobile Edition (Java mobile phones and smartphones, including BlackBerry) and the version of QlikView for iPhone - the first iPhone BI-application.
The extension for server version is called QlikView Publisher, it provides full control over the delivery of QlikView documents to users by automating the process of centralized data updates. This module also allows customization of applications to users and the timely delivery of reports to users in PDF.
Developers can connect to any data source and combine the information obtained from them using internal ETL-scripts (Extract - Transform - Load. QlikView scripts supports more than 200 different functions for processing, linking and cleaning the original data to create a QlikView resident data model. Users can easily upload data from any ERP-systems, data warehousing, databases, operating systems and any other data sources such as text files, Microsoft Excel documents, XML files or data obtained from the web-services.
The standard functionality of any QlikView BI-solution includes the following features:
- Use of the Create Report Wizard and 'drag-and-drop' objects in the generated report;
- wide range of settings for the design of reports;
- personalized notifications;
- QlikView integration of interactive objects in Microsoft Office;
- web components for integration with the Microsoft SharePoint portal;
- data export from an object into XML, Excel, CSV and TXT.
To expand the reporting capabilities in QlikView, you can use a special module for QlikView Server - QlikView Publisher. It is a single point of analytical control instruments and QlikView reports, which gives system administrators the ability to control access to documents and reports, QlikView, manage the distribution of reports, and configure security and control user access to the system. Using QlikView Publisher ensures the provision of analytical information and reports to users while enabling centralized protection of the confidentiality of corporate data.
